Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa and City Tour

Upon arrival at Bole International Airport, you will be met by a Rotate Ethiopia Tours representative and transferred to your reserved hotel. Depending on your arrival time, we have various sightseeing options:

Mount Entoto with panoramic views over the capital.
Institute of Ethiopian Studies, where you can see artifacts from different regions reflecting the history and culture of the country.
National Museum which exhibits the 3.5-million-year-old fossil of Lucy.
Holy Trinity Cathedral, the burial place of members of the imperial family and noted patriots, decorated with carvings and mosaics.
Mercato, the largest open-air market in Africa.

Day 2: Addis Ababa – Menagesha Suba National Park – Wolliso (185 km)

We start our journey westward from Addis Ababa to Wolliso. Our first stop is Menagesha Suba Forest National Park, about 20 km west of the capital. The forest contains juniper, African redwood, and yellowwood trees, as well as Mount Wechecha, an extinct volcano rising to 3,385 meters. The forest can be explored along scenic trails extending from the park headquarters. Wildlife includes black-and-white colobus monkeys, the endemic Menelik’s bushbuck, and Anubis baboons. Menagesha is also an important site for endemic forest birds. We will enjoy a pleasant hike before continuing our journey to Wolliso.

Day 3: Wenchi Crater Lake

From Wolliso, it takes approximately two hours to reach the rim of the Wenchi Crater. The views are breathtaking and we will undertake a pleasant trek, optionally on horseback, through beautiful scenery. From the crater rim, we descend into a lush valley with rivers. We may also cross the crater lake in a traditional boat and explore nearby hot springs. In the afternoon, we return to Wolliso for another night.

Day 4: Wolliso – Jimma – Bonga (345 km)

After breakfast, we continue westward via Jimma to Bonga. Along the way, we will visit the palace of the former Kafa king Ras Abba Jifar II overlooking the town and surrounding coffee forests. The palace reflects a time when the coffee trade brought wealth and power to the region. The economically strong region remained independent from the Ethiopian Empire until 1930. After visiting Jimma, we continue to Bonga, located in the heart of the Kaffa region and surrounded by mountainous rainforest.

Day 5: Kaffa Region

Today we start with an excursion to the Alem Gonna wetlands. An early morning visit offers excellent opportunities to see bird species and De Brazza’s monkeys in the misty landscape. We walk through the wetlands at sunrise and enjoy a freshly prepared picnic breakfast. After a short stop in Bonga, we will trek to the Barta Waterfall, which is over 70 meters high and surrounded by basalt walls in the rainforest. On the way back, we visit the home of Mirutse, a local beekeeper producing organic forest honey. He will share information about beekeeping and local plants. Those with extra energy can take an optional walk to hot springs in the rainforest.

Day 6: Bonga – Jimma – Addis Ababa (Flight)

After breakfast, we drive back to Jimma where you will take your flight to Addis Ababa. You will be transferred to your hotel where a day room will be provided until 6 PM. In the evening, you are invited to a traditional Ethiopian dinner with a cultural dance show. Afterwards, you will be transferred to the airport for your international departure or back to your hotel.

Day 7: Addis Ababa – Jinka

Fly from Addis Ababa to Jinka. Continue driving to Turmi for your introduction to the Hamer people. Walk through their gardens and neighborhoods and experience their traditional lifestyle.

Day 8: Nyangathom and Dassenech

Excursion to visit the Nyangathom and Dassenech people who live along the Omo River but at different distances. Spend the full day exploring these two ethnic groups and possibly attend local ceremonies depending on the dates.

Day 9: Visit Karo or Weekly Tribal Market

In the morning, visit the Karo tribe known for their body painting traditions. Later, drive to Jinka and visit the museum which explains the cultures and settlements of the Omo Valley people.

Day 10: Mursi – Addis Ababa

Early in the morning, drive to Mago National Park to visit the famous Mursi people. The Mursi women are known for wearing lip plates inserted into their lower lips. After visiting the village, return to Jinka for lunch and take a flight back to Addis Ababa. In the late afternoon, enjoy free time for shopping or a short walk before attending a cultural dinner with traditional music and dance.
